It features a generous open-plan living space at it's heart, replete with the warm tones of the bespoke oak joinery and crowned by the full-height bi-fold doors opening onto a private, enclosed courtyard. The oak tone is continued upstairs with the cleverly fitted wardrobes maximising storage space. The end result is a top-notch and spacious, modern dwelling that belies its modest budget.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Room for a Musician in The Architects' Journal Room for a Musician in The AJ Buildings Library Start: 01/2016 End: 11/2016 Gross area: 123sqm Party Wall Surveyor: FFT Approved Inspector: Assent Contractor: Polbath Joinery: Polbath Photography: © Simon Maxwell Services: Feasibility, Planning, Building Regulations, Detail Design, Tender, Contract Administration ‘A Room for a Musician’ is a small, infill-extension set within a leafy, Highbury terrace formed almost entirely underground. The result is a tardis-like trio of new subterranean spaces filled with daylight at every turn. The original brief was to rid the client’s duplex flat of a master bedroom long afflicted with damp, poor daylight and obstructed views to the garden. The client had to be persuaded JFA’s solution involving lots of digging, and some major new sub-structure for relatively little gain in floor area, was the best option. The primary move was to excavate the redundant side section of garden to create a 6m2 glazed, internal lightwell - the pivotal space for the musician-client to compose and practice his music. An enlarged doorway flowed from the bedroom, with a discreet curtain track for privacy and blackout. Secondly, a level threshold and glazed pivot door were installed along with new external steps (further digging) to access the garden and terrace, edged with a slender balustrade. A new fabricated metal stair with glazed landing was installed to connect to the upper ground level. Finally, opening-up of existing vaults discovered beneath the kitchen and slightly reducing the floor level (with yet more digging) formed a new walk-in wardrobe and soundproof home studio. The ‘basement suite’ was completed in late 2016 to the client’s delight. If the project were put to music it would probably be called ‘Earthworks’ – an opus in three movements, all of which involve, well, digging…</image:caption>

Structural Engineer: Momentum Approved Inspector: Assent Contractor: Clockwork Construction Photography: © Peter Abrahams J Foster Architects created a contemporary, west-facing roof terrace. A dilapidated pitched roof above a rear brick outrigger was converted using high quality materials on a modest budget. The architect's approach was an example of guerrilla space-making, to utilise and beautify the crumbling Victorian terraces that typify this part of London. A Mosa tiled floor floats amidst the tree canopy, edged by an 1.1m high balustrade which appears as a diaphanous haze reflecting the play of the evening sun through the trees. Towering at 3 storeys above the garden, a head for heights is required.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Archive - Overview - Urban Cabin</image:title>
<image:caption>Urban Cabin in The Architect's Journal Founding director Jeremy Foster was approached to create a garden room for leisure and retreat for a designer located in her Islington garden. The architect sought to create a ‘sanctuary from urbanity and modernity’ and recreate the metaphorical cabin in the woods, but specific to its north-London garden setting. Interpreting the Norwegian ‘hytte’ cabin typology, (a remote and ascetic retreat with pared back functionality), the architect conceived of an intimate and flexible space sympathetic to its surroundings, beneath mature sycamore and ash trees. Clad externally in Siberian Larch, with openable brise-soleil screens to doors and windows, its orientation exploits north and south light and retains views over the garden. The interior is clad in douglas fir (lye and white soap finish) to create a light filled yet private interior. Structural wall and roof panels are made from plywood cassettes filled with Earthwool, and the structural floor deck sits on jackpads – I.e. no foundations. Planning consent for the 5sqm cabin was received in spring 2017.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Start: 2021 Gross area: 30 sqm Services: Feasibility, Permitted Development Structural Engineer: Constant J Foster Architects was appointed to create a garden room (outbuilding) behind a Victorian townhouse in Highbury, Islington. The proposal is an elegant outbuilding clad in timber which will create a 30sqm internal space with stunning views onto the private rear garden. An inner skin is formed of PPC composite framed DGU units. A secondary skin is formed of a timber superframe. A tertiary skin is formed of vertical timber battens to provide shading and privacy. The roof is planted with intensive green roofing to soften the outbuilding’s appearance within the mature garden setting. This could include sedum and/or plug plants. Frameless glazed rooflights provide toplight to the internal space.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - Masterplanning and Urban Design</image:title>
<image:caption>We have significant experience delivering larger, more complex urban projects. Our urban regeneration experience involved weaving contextual modernism into whole urban blocks with listed/conservation elements at their core. Sustainability and ecology was integral to the architecture, as was the structural and services design, the public realm hard landscaping, and architectural and amenity lighting. We have working relationships with some of the leading consultants in these disciplines. Example project: Urban Splash</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - Consultation and Engagement</image:title>
<image:caption>We believe that the design process enriches the end product and we evolve each project in close dialogue with the client, users and stakeholders. We have a wealth of experience of one-on-one consultations at Ask an Expert at the Homebuilding and Renovation Show, as well as Ask an Expert at the The Grand Designs Show. We also took part on the expert panel on the main stage at the Grand Designs Show. On our most sensitive heritage projects, design clinics, informal meetings and charrettes is a great way to engage with neighbours and the wider community.</image:caption>
